A quiet residential street in Limpertsberg, Luxembourg City

Ville Haute — pay for the view

The old town on the promontory is where you’ll spend the most time. Hotels here are limited and expensive: Hotel Le Place d’Armes ($380+), Hotel Parc Beaux-Arts ($260), Simoncini ($180). You wake up on Place d’Armes with the cathedral bells and the Chemin de la Corniche 3 minutes away. Worth the premium for a first-time 2-3 night stay.

Gare — cheap, transit-perfect, edgy

The area around the central station has 80% of the city's mid-range hotels: Hotel Bristol ($95), Hotel Français ($110), Hotel Empire ($120). Every tram and bus stops here. The southern edge of the Gare (Rue de Strasbourg, Rue Joseph Junck) has some sex shops and drug scene at night — the north side (toward the Adolphe Bridge) is fine. For most travellers on a budget, this is the sensible base.

Grund and Clausen — atmospheric valleys

Down in the Alzette valley, the Grund is medieval, cobbled and quiet after 10pm. Very few hotels — Hotel Français in Bourbon and Auberge de Jeunesse (hostel, $35) are the main options. Clausen next door is the nightlife strip. Stay here if you want restaurants and bars on your doorstep and don’t mind the climb back up to Ville Haute (or take the free Pfaffenthal lift).

Kirchberg — modern, businesslike

The plateau east of the old town is where EU institutions, banks and the Philharmonie live. Hotels are large and reliable: Sofitel Europe ($220), Novotel ($150), Melia ($200). Good for museum access (Mudam is walkable) and tram to town is 8 minutes. Weekends are dead — restaurants close, streets empty. Fine for 1 night, not for a full weekend.

Limpertsberg and Belair — residential quiet

North and west of the center. Hotel Albert Premier in Belair ($160) is a lovely small hotel in a leafy street 15 minutes' walk to the palace. Limpertsberg has boutique guest houses and Airbnbs from $110. Best if you want peace, a park (Merl or the Pescatore) and a residential feel. Buses into town run every 10 minutes.

Is the Gare district safe?

Mostly yes. It's the busiest area at all hours because of the station. The southern blocks (Rue Joseph Junck, parts of Rue de Strasbourg) have visible drug use and street work at night — nothing dangerous to a tourist walking past, but not charming either.

Where's best for a first visit?

Ville Haute if budget allows, Gare if not. Both keep you inside the sightseeing zone and on the free transit network.

Are there any decent hostels?

Luxembourg City Youth Hostel in the Alzette valley is clean, well-run and $32-38 for a dorm. Private twins $95. Breakfast included. Book ahead — school groups fill it in season.

Is Airbnb a good option?

Legal and available but not cheap — expect $130+ for a 1-bedroom, similar to hotels. Better value outside the center in Limpertsberg or Bonnevoie.
