The Gare quarter is where trains arrive and where the majority of Luxembourg's affordable hotels cluster. Avenue de la Liberté runs from Gare Centrale straight up to Pont Adolphe and Ville Haute — 20 minutes on foot or 3 stops on the tram. It's the most ethnically mixed neighborhood in the city (Portuguese, Cape Verdean, Italian, plus recent Eritrean and Syrian communities), which means the best cheap food: Portuguese grilled chicken on rue de Strasbourg, Italian on rue Joseph Junck, kebabs open until midnight around the station itself.

There's a small red-light strip on rue Joseph Junck and rue de Strasbourg that Luxembourgers moralize about — in practice it's a couple of blocks of tired bars and one clearly-marked area, well-policed, and completely fine to walk through. If it makes you uncomfortable, stay on avenue de la Liberté side. This suits budget travelers, anyone connecting by train, and people who want restaurants open past 22:00 without paying old-town prices.

Where to stay

Hotels on avenue de la Liberté, rue du Fort Neipperg and rue Glesener run USD 80-140, dropping under USD 70 in January and August. This is your cheapest central option by a wide margin. Avoid rooms directly on rue Joseph Junck or the block immediately behind the station on rue de Strasbourg unless price is your only criterion. The stretch of avenue de la Liberté closer to Pont Adolphe (upper end, near Place de Paris) is genuinely nice — leafy, quiet after 21:00, five minutes to Ville Haute across the bridge.

Getting there

Gare Centrale is the country's main rail hub — trains to Brussels (3h), Paris (2h15 by TGV, USD 45-90), Trier, Metz and the entire Luxembourg regional network. All domestic trains are free. Tram T1 runs from the Gare through the center to Kirchberg and the airport, every 6 minutes, free. Buses to everywhere in the country depart from the station forecourt. Findel airport is 25 minutes by tram, 20 by bus 29.

Is the Gare area safe at night?

Broadly yes. The red-light strip on rue Joseph Junck can feel dingy but there's no meaningful violent crime. Police presence around the station is heavy. Standard city precautions apply — don’t flash a phone at 03:00, and stick to avenue de la Liberté if you prefer a nicer streetscape.

Should I stay at Gare or Ville Haute?

Gare if you’re on a budget or arriving by train — you’ll save USD 40-80 a night and it's a 20-minute walk or 3 tram stops to the old town. Ville Haute if you want atmosphere and don’t mind paying for it. Kids-and-luggage travelers should prefer Gare.
