BREWERY DISTRICT
Clausen
The former Mousel brewery in Clausen at dusk with terrace lights
Clausen sits in the Alzette valley just downstream from Grund, wedged between the fortress cliff and the Kirchberg plateau. It's where the Mousel and Clausel breweries operated for a century until the buildings were converted around 2007 into the Rives de Clausen — a strip of restaurants, cocktail bars and a nightclub. Weekends it's the loudest place in Luxembourg; Sunday morning it's dead silent and you can walk past the Trois Tours medieval gate without seeing another person.
Robert Schuman, one of the architects of the EU, was born on rue Jules Wilhelm — his house is a small museum, worth 20 minutes if you’re into 20th-century history. This is a neighborhood to visit rather than stay in unless you specifically want to fall out of a bar into your bed. It suits weekend travelers who want to walk to nightlife; skip it if you have an early flight or you’re a light sleeper.
Where to stay
Options are limited — a couple of small hotels near rue de la Tour Jacob, USD 120-180. The Melusina complex has some rooms above the club, avoid Friday and Saturday nights unless you own industrial earplugs. Better bet is Ville Haute or Clausen's quieter east end near rue Jules Wilhelm and the Schuman birthplace, where you’re a 15-minute walk from Rives de Clausen but out of the noise corridor.
Getting there
Bus 14 and 23 run from Hamilius through Clausen every 10-15 minutes during the day. From Kirchberg, walk down via the footbridge from Boulevard Konrad Adenauer, 15 minutes and steep. At night after 22:00 the City Night Bus CN1 covers Rives de Clausen back to the center hourly until 03:30. Taxi from Findel airport is around USD 30, 20 minutes.
Frequently asked questions
How loud is Rives de Clausen at night?
Very loud on Friday and Saturday until 01:00-03:00. The valley acoustics amplify everything. If you stay within 200 meters of rue Emile Mousel on a weekend, expect to hear the club until closing. Weekdays are fine.
Are the Rives de Clausen bars worth it midweek?
Honestly no — half are closed or empty on Monday and Tuesday. The strip only really works Thursday to Saturday. Midweek head to Grund or the Gare quarter for more consistent nightlife.
