The Grund neighbourhood below the old town ramparts

Sleep: hostel over hotel

Book Luxembourg City Youth Hostel on Rue du Fort Olisy, in the Alzette valley below the old town. Dorm beds run $32-38 with breakfast, private twins $95. It's cleaner than most European hostels and 10 minutes' walk to the lift up to Ville Haute. Kitchen is open till 10pm, cutting your dinner budget in half.

Alternative: Hostel Vianden ($34) if you want a night out of the city, or Youth Hostel Remerschen ($36) by the Moselle.

Day 1: Free walking loop

All the classic sights cost $0 to look at. Start at the Gare, tram to Hamilius, walk Rue du Fossé to the Grand Ducal Palace, then the Corniche, Bock (skip the paid casemate interior — the view from the ramparts is free), down into the Grund and back up via the Pfaffenthal lift. Lunch is a €8 ($8.50) pretzel-and-soup combo at Oberweis on Grand-Rue. Coffee stops at Knopes for $3.50 espresso.

Day 2: Museum + Mullerthal edge

Wednesdays are free at the National Museum of Archaeology, History and Art on Marché-aux-Poissons. Otherwise it's $8. Then take the free train to Echternach (1h20) and do a 3-hour section of the Mullerthal Trail from Berdorf to Schiessentümpel waterfall. Pack a supermarket sandwich from Cactus or Delhaize — about $5 versus $18 at trailhead restaurants.

Day 3: South and cheap eats

Train to Belval-Université ($0) to see the industrial heritage site — the blast furnaces are open to visitors and free. Back in the capital, head to Beim Renert on Rue Muenster in the Grund for a $12 daily plate, or grab a Bofferding beer and gromperekichelcher at Konrad Café for under $10. Sunset from the Chemin de la Corniche is free and the best photograph you’ll take all trip.

Are there any free museums?

Wednesdays are free at MNHA (National Museum of History and Art) and Villa Vauban. The Pfaffenthal panoramic lift, the ramparts walk and the Belval blast furnace site are always free.

Where's the cheapest place to eat a real meal?

Chiche! on Rue Chimay does a $12 mezze plate. Beim Renert in the Grund has a $12 lunch. University canteens are open to the public at lunch for around $9 with student ID or $13 without.

Can I skip the paid casemates?

Yes — the Bock ramparts walkway, the views, and the outdoor sections cost nothing. The $8 ticket only gets you into the tunnel interior, which is atmospheric but 30 minutes.
