When to visit Luxembourg

Spring (March-May)

Cool and unpredictable in March (highs 50°F, lows near freezing), warming to reliable 65°F by mid-May. Cherry blossom on the ramparts in early April. Octave pilgrimage runs late April to early May, drawing crowds and filling hotels. Whit Tuesday brings the Echternach Sprangprëssessioun — book beds in Echternach months ahead. Otherwise May is the best all-round month: warm enough to hike, cool enough to sleep, and hotel prices haven’t fully climbed.

Summer (June-August)

Highs 75-82°F, occasional heatwaves to 90°F. Long days — light until 10pm at midsummer. National Day on June 23rd is the big party, with fireworks over the Pétrusse valley and a torchlit parade on the 22nd. Schueberfouer, the country's biggest funfair, runs late August to early September on the Glacis. Prices peak in July and hotels can hit $250 for standard rooms. August is quieter as locals leave for the coast.

Autumn (September-November)

September is my favorite: warm days (70°F), harvest in the vineyards, thinner crowds, hotel rates back to $130-150. Wine festivals in Grevenmacher (early September) and Wormeldange. October gets damp and cool; November is often grey and 45°F. Museums do free evenings for Nuit des Musées in mid-October.

Winter (December-February)

December is when Luxembourg comes into its own — the Wanterlights market on Place d’Armes and Place de la Constitution runs late November to early January, with a Ferris wheel, mulled wine ($5) and ice skating ($6). January and February are cold (40°F/25°F), quiet and cheap — $95 hotel rooms in the center. Snow is occasional, not reliable.

When to avoid

Late April Octave week (hotels doubled, cathedral packed), June 22-23 unless you want the party (rates surge, streets closed), and the first week of September when Schueberfouer plus back-to-work traffic clogs the city.

What's the best month to visit Luxembourg?

May or September. Warm, dry-ish, hotel rates 20% below summer peak, and everything is open. May adds cherry blossom; September adds wine harvest.

Does it snow in Luxembourg?

Sometimes. The capital gets a few dustings a year, rarely lasting. The Ardennes get more, and skiing at Baraque de Fraiture (just over the Belgian border) is possible some years.

When is the Christmas market?

Late November to early January, mainly on Place d’Armes, Place de la Constitution and Place Guillaume II. Open daily including Christmas Eve until early evening.

Are museums open on holidays?

Most close December 25, January 1 and May 1. National Day (June 23) has variable openings. Check individual sites — MNHA and Mudam usually list holiday hours online a month ahead.
