The Chemin de la Corniche overlooking the Alzette valley
The Chemin de la Corniche and the ramparts
Called Europe's most beautiful balcony by Luxembourgish writer Batty Weber, the Corniche is a 600m walkway along the old ramparts overlooking the Grund. Free, always open, best at sunset. Continue up to the Bock — the entry to the paid casemate tunnels is $8 but the outdoor promontory and views cost nothing.
The Pfaffenthal panoramic lift
Free glass elevator connecting Ville Haute (near Pescatore park) with the Pfaffenthal valley 71m below. Runs 5.45am-1am, 40 seconds each way, and delivers a jaw-dropping view over the viaduct and railway on the way down. Combine with a walk through Pfaffenthal to the Grund.
Free museums and free days
The Musée Dräi Eechelen at Kirchberg is always free — 250 years of Luxembourg's military history in a fortified redoubt. MNHA and Villa Vauban are free on Wednesdays. Nuit des Musées in October — 1 evening, 7 museums free until 1am with shuttle buses. Villa Vauban is free every day for under-21s.
Grand Ducal Palace guard and the Grund walk
Changing of the guard at the palace, 10am and 1pm daily. Not on Buckingham scale but photogenic. Then walk the free stairs and cobbles down Montée du Grund into the valley — riverbanks, old bridges, the Neumünster Abbey courtyard, and small parks. Loop back up via the Corniche or the Pfaffenthal lift.
Belval blast furnaces and Kirchberg architecture
The reconverted steelworks at Belval-Université are open to visitors — the rusted blast furnace towers loom over the university campus and cost nothing to walk around. In the city, Kirchberg is a free open-air modern architecture tour: I.M. Pei's Mudam, the Christian de Portzamparc Philharmonie, Ricardo Bofill's Court of Justice.
Countryside on the free train
Free national rail means the country's parks are all free access. Ride to Kautenbach in the Ardennes for the Escapardenne trail, or to Ehnen for a Moselle village walk. Zero admission, zero transport cost — the biggest free bonus of visiting Luxembourg.
