Bakery lunches

Oberweis and Fischer are the two big Luxembourg bakery chains. Both do $6-8 sandwiches on their own bread — smoked salmon with dill cream, ham with Emmental, roast beef with horseradish. Add a coffee for $3.50. Fischer on Rue du Fort Bourbon (near the station) and Oberweis on Grand-Rue are the handiest branches.

Kebabs, falafel, banh mi

Istanbul on Rue de Strasbourg does a $7 kebab in bread with salad. Chiche! on Rue Chimay has a $9 falafel plate. Banh Mi Kitchen on Rue du Curé sells Vietnamese pork sandwiches for $8. All takeaway-focused; some seating.

University canteens

The University of Luxembourg's canteen at Maison du Savoir in Belval is open to the public at lunchtime — a full plate with sides is $9 without student ID. There's also a smaller Restopolis at Limpertsberg. Weekday lunch only, 11.30am-2pm.

Market and takeaway

The Place Guillaume II market Wednesday/Saturday morning has $6 sausage baguettes and $5 fresh crêpes. Cactus and Delhaize supermarkets in town do $5 pasta boxes and $3 sushi rolls at lunch. Konrad Café off Rue du Nord has $8 daily plates. Pizza al taglio at Bella Napoli on Rue de Strasbourg goes for $4 a slice.

Late-night on the cheap

After midnight, Snacks Prima on Place de la Gare does kebabs and burgers until 3am for $8. Nightclubs in Rives de Clausen turn to $10 pizzas on the way home.
