Stalls at the Wednesday market on Place Guillaume II
Place Guillaume II — Wed and Sat mornings
The main food market runs Wednesdays and Saturdays, roughly 7am-1pm, on the square in front of the Hôtel de Ville. Around 40 stalls: local cheeses (Kass-Haff), organic vegetables from the Minett, Ardennes hams, oysters from a Breton fishmonger and fresh flowers. Grab a $6 sausage baguette from the German butcher's stall and coffee from the surrounding cafés.
Bio-Maart Kirchberg — Wed afternoons
Runs Wednesdays 12-6pm on Place de l’Europe at Kirchberg. Smaller than Guillaume, exclusively organic, and popular with the EU crowd. Good for cheese, bread, honey and seasonal fruit. Combine with a Mudam visit.
Glacis flea market — twice monthly
Second and 4th Sunday of the month from March to November, on the Glacis parking field (10-minute walk north of the palace). Around 200 stalls of secondhand books, vinyl, vintage clothes, watches, WWII bits and general junk. Serious dealers arrive at 8am; casual browsers 10am is fine. Runs until 4-5pm. Free entry.
Marché de Noël — late Nov to early Jan
The Christmas market — Wanterlights — spreads across Place d’Armes (crafts and food), Place de la Constitution (Ferris wheel, ice rink) and Place Guillaume II. Open daily including Christmas Eve, typically 11am-9pm. Mulled wine (Glühwäin) $5, gromperekichelcher $5, grilled sausage $7. Actually good, not tacky.
Farmer's markets in the villages
Bettembourg has a Friday market (7am-1pm) that's cheaper and more local than the capital. Grevenmacher does a big wine harvest market in early September. Esch-sur-Alzette runs a Saturday market on Place de la Résistance.
Frequently asked questions
When is the main Luxembourg City market?
Wednesdays and Saturdays, 7am-1pm, on Place Guillaume II. Get there before 10am for the best selection.
Is the Glacis flea market worth going to?
Yes if you like vintage or bric-a-brac. It's the biggest in the country — 200+ stalls — and better than the small weekly antique fair on Place d’Armes.
When does the Christmas market open?
Late November (typically the Friday before the 1st Advent Sunday) through early January. Open daily 11am-9pm, later on weekends. Free entry across all 3 squares.
Can I pay by card at the markets?
Most stalls at Place Guillaume II now take card. Flea market vendors are cash-only. Christmas market food stalls take card for anything over $10.
