Luxembourgers take July-August holidays seriously. Roughly the first three weeks of August, independent restaurants close entirely — Um Plateau, Bouquet Garni, La Cristallerie's bistro, several Clausen and Grund spots, most bakeries in Belair and Limpertsberg. Schueberfouer changes everything from around 22 August. It's a genuine 700-year-old funfair on the Champ du Glacis, running 20 days into early September, and it's huge — 200 rides and stalls, gebakke fesch (fried fish), mettwurst, and enough noise to hear from Limpertsberg. Rooms near Glacis (Belair, Limpertsberg) sell out weekends. The last night's fireworks around 8 September are worth catching.

How to plan around it

Come first three weeks of August for a quieter, cheaper-feeling city, but accept that some famous restaurants will be shut. Check restaurant websites two weeks before booking — most post their fermeture annuelle dates by June. Book hotel restaurants in advance for weekend dinners because they absorb the overflow. Consider a Moselle-based stay instead: Remich, Ehnen and Wormeldange stay lively with wine tourism through August.

Come 22 August onwards for Schueberfouer and full city energy back. Prices don’t drop until early September but the atmosphere shifts completely.
