Stops 1-5: Plateau and Corniche

Start at the Gare (main station) — most visitors arrive here. Walk north on Avenue de la Liberté 10 minutes, crossing the Pont Adolphe (stop 1: pause mid-span for the Petrusse valley view). Continue to Place de la Constitution (stop 2: the Gelle Fra memorial). Walk east past the Cathedral (stop 3: enter for the crypt, free, closed 12-2pm) to Place Guillaume II and the Palace (stop 4). Cut through to the Chemin de la Corniche (stop 5) — Europe's most beautiful balcony, and the heart of this route.

Walk the full Corniche east to Bock promontory. Even without paying for the casemates, the outdoor viewpoints here are the reason the whole old city is UNESCO-listed. Allow 90 minutes for stops 1 to 5 including cathedral time.

Stops 6-10: Down to Grund and back up

From Bock, take the stairs down into Grund (stop 6: cross the Alzette on the little stone bridge). Walk west along Rue Munster past Neumunster Abbey (stop 7: courtyard is free, worth a look). Continue to the Grund elevator at Rue Saint-Ulric (stop 8) and ride it up to Plateau du Saint-Esprit. From there walk to the Pfaffenthal panoramic lift (stop 9) and take it down to the lower town — glass floor, 71 metres, free.

In Pfaffenthal, walk under the Passerelle viaduct (stop 10: 45 metres above you) and along the Alzette. This stretch is the least touristy part of the walk and gives you the fortifications from below rather than above. Lift back up when you’re ready.

Stops 11-14: Old town finish

Back on plateau level, walk to the Trois Tours (stop 11) at the north edge of the old town — three medieval towers of the original city wall. South down Rue Sigefroi past the fish market square (stop 12: this is the oldest part of the city, founded 963). Rue de l’Eau to Place Guillaume II again, then down Rue Chimay to Place d’Armes (stop 13: main square, always lively). Finish at the Villa Vauban gardens (stop 14) for a rest on a bench.

Total distance about 6km with roughly 200m of climbing, most of it done by lift. Allow 4 hours with stops, 5 with a proper lunch break at Bosso or Chiggeri around stop 4. Wear real shoes — the Corniche and Grund cobbles are uneven, and the Bock stairs are steep.

Frequently asked questions

Can this route be done in reverse?

Yes, but starting at Gare and ending at Place d’Armes puts you exactly where you want to be for lunch or dinner. Reverse only if you’re staying near the station.

Is it doable with a stroller?

Mostly. The Corniche is smooth and both major lifts are stroller-friendly. Skip the Bock stairs down to Grund and use the elevator instead in both directions.
