A Walking Route Through Luxembourg City: 9 km, 4 Hours, No Backtracking

Gare to Ville Haute via the Pétrusse

Start at Gare de Luxembourg at 9:00. Walk north up Avenue de la Liberté, cross the Pont Adolphe (look down into the Pétrusse valley — you’ll be walking it shortly), and enter Ville Haute at Place de Metz. Loop through Place Guillaume II and the Palace before descending into the Pétrusse Casemates entrance on Place de la Constitution. Walk the valley floor east under the viaduct arches — a proper landscaped park most tourists miss. Come up on the Clausen side via the stairs near the Neumünster abbey.

Grund and Clausen along the water

You’re now in the Grund. Follow the Alzette north past the Neumünster and under the Bock rock. The path stays flat and shaded. Continue into Clausen — the old brewery buildings on Rue Émile Mousel are now bars and restaurants (good coffee stop at Melusina or Konrad on the terrace). From here, climb the Montée de Clausen back up to the Old Town, or take the free Pfaffenthal panoramic lift on Plateau du Rham to save your knees. That's roughly 5 km so far.

Corniche to Kirchberg

Back on top, walk the Chemin de la Corniche east to Plateau Altmünster, then ride the free Pfaffenthal funicular down and the tram across the Pont Grande-Duchesse Charlotte to Kirchberg. Walk from Philharmonie stop past Mudam and the European institutions to the Fort Thüngen tower. That's your finish line — the Dräi Eechelen museum inside is free and gives a fortress-history payoff. Total: about 9 km, four hours with stops.
