Originally a Roman watchtower, expanded into a Carolingian refuge and then into one of the largest feudal residences west of the Rhine, Vianden Castle is the postcard image of Luxembourg. The counts of Vianden held sway here from the 11th to the 15th century; the castle then passed to the House of Orange-Nassau and, after decades of ruin, was donated to the state in 1977 and painstakingly restored. Today it houses reconstructed halls, a chapel with a 12th-century two-storey design, and a small collection of arms and armour.

The castle sits 30 km north of Luxembourg City in the Ardennes. The most scenic approach is the chairlift (télésiège) from the river, which drops you a five-minute walk above the castle; combined with a downhill return on foot through the medieval village, it makes a perfect half-day. Ettelbruck is the nearest train station, then bus 570 up the valley. Inside, allow 90 minutes minimum for the self-guided route.

How much are tickets?

Adults $11, students and seniors $9, children 6-18 $3, under-6s free. Family ticket $22 covers 2 adults and up to 4 children.

Is admission ever free?

There are no scheduled free days, but entry is included in the $15 LuxembourgCard and on European Heritage Days in September.

How long should I plan?

The self-guided castle visit takes 90 minutes to 2 hours. With the chairlift and village stroll, plan a full half-day from Luxembourg City.

When is the castle closed?

Only on 25 December and 1 January. Hours shorten to 10:00-16:00 in November, December and February.

Do I need to book online?

Not required on ordinary days; tickets are sold at the door. Book ahead at castle-vianden.lu during the August festival weekend.

How do I get there without a car?

Train to Ettelbruck (25 min from Luxembourg City), then bus 570 to Vianden, Op der Rousentrap. Total travel time about 1 h 15 min, and public transport is free in Luxembourg.
