Medieval ruins and adjacent Renaissance chateau of Beaufort in the Mullerthal region
Beaufort is unusual in Europe: two castles from different centuries stand a stone's throw apart on the same estate. The medieval castle, built in stages from the 11th to the 15th century, is a classic ruin of curtain walls, a keep and a former chapel, sitting picturesquely beside a small pond. Next to it, the Renaissance chateau of 1649 was built by Johann von Beck, a governor of Luxembourg, and remained privately inhabited until 2012, when it was opened to the public with its 17th-century interiors intact.
Tickets for the two are sold separately, and only the Renaissance chateau requires a guided tour. Come with time to do both, plus a walk in the surrounding Mullerthal Region (nicknamed Little Switzerland) whose sandstone gorges and beech forests start at the castle gate. The estate also produces a well-known blackcurrant liqueur, Cassero, sold in the visitor shop.

Both castles close entirely from 1 November to 31 March. The Renaissance chateau is also closed on Mondays and Tuesdays in season.

Booking is essential for the Renaissance chateau tour (limited to 15 places). The medieval ruin never requires reservation.
How do I get there?
Bus 414 from Echternach (20 min) or bus 107 from Ettelbruck to Beaufort, Duerfplaz. From the village it is an 8-minute walk down Rue du Château.
