Merl is west of Hollerich and south of Belair, essentially a residential district built up in the 1950s-70s around the large Merl-Belair park. There's not much to see and even less to do in a tourist sense — a couple of local squares (Place Nico Klopp), a Portuguese-heavy commercial strip along rue de Merl and rue de Trèves, some good bakeries, and the park itself which is the real reason anyone comes here.

For most visitors Merl is not a base — it's a park visit on a Sunday morning. The exception is business travelers using the Cloche d’Or business district to the south, or families who want green space and low prices in exchange for a longer commute to the old town. Hotel options are thin but what exists tends to be well-priced. The neighborhood at 21:00 is empty in a peaceful, safe way, not an unsettling one.

Where to stay

A handful of hotels and B&Bs, USD 95-140. Positions near rue de Merl and Place Nico Klopp give you café access; positions closer to the park give you quiet and morning runs. Bus 12 runs rue de Merl to Hamilius every 8-12 minutes. Avoid the industrial edge along route d’Esch, which technically borders Merl but has none of the neighborhood's charm.

Getting there

Bus 12 runs the neighborhood to Hamilius every 8-12 minutes, free, about 12 minutes. Bus 21 covers route d’Esch on the south edge. No tram service. From Findel airport, tram T1 to Hamilius then bus 12, about 40 minutes total, or a taxi USD 35 in 20 minutes. Walking to Gare Centrale takes 25-30 minutes.

Is Merl worth choosing as a base?

Only if the price difference matters and you don’t mind a 15-25 minute bus commute to the old town. As a tourist neighborhood it has almost nothing. As a place to sleep quietly and jog in the morning, it works well.

Bus 12 to Hamilius or Gare, then tram T1 to Findel. About 40 minutes total, free. Alternatively a taxi direct for USD 30-40 in 20 minutes. There's no direct airport bus from Merl itself.
