Hollerich
Warehouse conversions and street art on rue de Hollerich
Hollerich sits southwest of Gare, along the route d’Esch and rue de Hollerich, historically a light-industrial and railway district. In the last decade it's been slowly gentrifying: former warehouses converted into offices, a couple of coworking spaces, decent Ethiopian and Turkish restaurants along route d’Esch, and a small cluster of design agencies around rue de l’Aciérie. The Luxembourg City Film Festival often uses venues here in March.
It's a good budget base with a slightly grittier feel than the Gare quarter itself. You’re 10-15 minutes on foot from Gare Centrale, 20 minutes from Ville Haute, and hotel prices are consistently 15-25% below the center. The Bouneweger Stuff area on the Bonnevoie border has some of the best value dinners in the city. Skip if you want tourist infrastructure — Hollerich is where Luxembourgers live and work, not where they take visitors.
Where to stay
Hotels along rue de Hollerich, route d’Esch and around Place de Strasbourg, USD 85-140. Position matters more than usual: closer to Gare (rue de Strasbourg end) means noisier and more mixed; further out toward the Cloche d’Or area means quieter but longer walks. Bus 21 and 22 connect route d’Esch to the center every 10 minutes. Avoid anything on the industrial route d’Esch stretch past Cloche d’Or unless you have a car.
Getting there
Buses 21 and 22 run route d’Esch to Hamilius every 10 minutes, free, about 12 minutes. Bus 4 covers rue de Hollerich to Gare Centrale in 5 minutes. Walking to Gare Centrale takes 10-15 minutes from most of the neighborhood. From Findel airport, tram T1 to Gare then bus 21 or a 10-minute walk, about 40 minutes total.
Frequently asked questions
Is Hollerich safe?
Yes. It's a mixed working neighborhood with some rough edges around the rail sidings but no meaningful crime issue. The stretches near Cloche d’Or and the office conversions feel completely bland-suburban.
Where's the best cheap dinner in Hollerich?
The Ethiopian and Turkish restaurants along route d’Esch will fill two people for under USD 40 total. For a proper sit-down local meal at a budget price, Bouneweger Stuff on the Bonnevoie border does a set lunch around USD 20.
