The Sauer river passing through Ettelbruck with hills behind

Ettelbruck sits at the confluence of the Alzette and Sauer rivers in central-north Luxembourg, 25 minutes from the capital by train. It's the main transport hub for the Ardennes region — trains split here for Diekirch, Wiltz and Clervaux — and functions as a small market town serving the surrounding rural area. The center is walkable, functional and unpretentious. The General Patton Memorial Museum on rue Dr Klein commemorates the American general who liberated the town in December 1944.

For most visitors, Ettelbruck is a base or a change of trains rather than a destination. Prices are notably lower than the capital, and it gives you easy access to Vianden (25 minutes by bus), Diekirch (5 minutes by train), and the Ardennes hiking country to the north. The town center has enough restaurants for a few days' stay. Suits travelers using it as an Ardennes base, or families visiting the WWII history sites. Skip if you want a picturesque medieval town — Ettelbruck is workmanlike.

Where to stay

Hotels around the train station and along Grand-Rue, USD 75-130. Position near the station gives you easy access to Vianden buses and Ardennes trains. The town center is very walkable. This is one of the cheapest bases for visiting Vianden and the Ardennes without staying in a small village.

Getting there

Ettelbruck is a major rail junction: trains from Luxembourg Gare every 30 minutes, 25-minute journey, free. Onward trains to Diekirch (5 minutes), Clervaux (30 minutes) and Troisvierges. Bus 570 to Vianden hourly. From Findel airport, tram T1 to Gare then train, about 50 minutes total. Buses cover the surrounding villages.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ettelbruck a good base for the Ardennes?

Yes — it's the transport hub for the north, has enough hotels, and prices are lower than staying inside Vianden or Clervaux themselves. Trade-off is that Ettelbruck itself is not particularly picturesque. If atmosphere matters more than price, stay in Vianden.

How long does it take to get to Vianden from Ettelbruck?

25 minutes on bus 570, which runs hourly during the day. It's free. There's no direct train to Vianden — buses only.
