STEEL TOWN SOUTH
Dudelange
The Waassertuerm water tower photography center in Dudelange
Dudelange is the southernmost significant town in Luxembourg, on the French border 20 minutes by train from the capital. Historically another steel town — ArcelorMittal still operates a plant here — and now home to the Centre National de l’Audiovisuel (CNA), which runs the excellent Waassertuerm and Pomhouse photography exhibition spaces in the converted industrial water tower and pump house complex on the town's east edge.
The Ginzebierg hill on the south edge of town has a viewing tower with a panorama across three countries (Luxembourg, France, Germany on a clear day). The town center around avenue Grand-Duc Jean is functional rather than pretty — some Portuguese restaurants, a small Saturday market, chain stores. Suits visitors interested in photography and industrial heritage, or budget travelers using it as a base for Luxembourg City day trips. Skip if you want a picturesque town center.

Getting there

Frequently asked questions
Is the Waassertuerm photography center actually good?
Yes — it's the most serious photography exhibition space in Luxembourg, with a strong archive and rotating shows that regularly justify a specific trip. Combine with lunch in town and the Ginzebierg walk for a full day.
Can I see three countries from the Ginzebierg tower?
On a clear day yes — Luxembourg immediately below, France to the south, and the Saarland (Germany) to the east. On hazy days you’ll see maybe 5 km. Best chances are cool mornings in autumn and spring.
