The Sauer river and old bridge at Diekirch

Diekirch sits on the Sauer river 5 minutes east of Ettelbruck by train. It's a small town of around 7,000 people with an outsized reputation for two things: the Diekirch brewery (Luxembourg's largest and most-drunk beer) and the National Museum of Military History, which is one of the best WWII museums in the region for the Battle of the Bulge. The town center around Place Guillaume and the old Roman-era church of Saint Laurent is pleasant, walkable and refreshingly non-touristic.

It's a slightly quieter and more atmospheric alternative to Ettelbruck as an Ardennes base. Fewer hotels, but a nicer town center and immediate access to walking trails into the Herrenberg forest and along the Sauer. The town holds a well-known Cavalcade carnival parade on Fasching Sunday (February or early March). Suits travelers who want a small Ardennes town feel with train access; skip if you need extensive dining or nightlife.

Where to stay

A handful of hotels and guesthouses around the center and near the station, USD 75-130. Position near Place Guillaume gives you the pleasant old center; anywhere else in town is fine given how compact it is. Free parking is generally easy to find, and trains connect you to Ettelbruck and the capital.

Getting there

Trains from Luxembourg Gare via Ettelbruck to Diekirch run every 30 minutes, about 30 minutes total, free. Bus connections to Vianden (via Ettelbruck, roughly 40 minutes) and around the Ardennes villages. From Findel airport, tram T1 to Gare then train, about 55 minutes total. The town itself is walkable in 20 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Diekirch military museum worth the trip?

Yes, especially if you’re at all interested in WWII. It's genuinely one of the best Battle of the Bulge museums, with detail and artifacts you won’t see elsewhere. Two hours minimum, and combine with Ettelbruck's Patton museum for a full day.

Diekirch or Ettelbruck as a base?

Diekirch has a nicer town center but fewer hotels and less choice. Ettelbruck is more of a hub with more options but plainer. If you can find a room in Diekirch it's the more pleasant stay; otherwise Ettelbruck works fine.
