Who it suits
Ville Haute is the walled upper town, the postcard bit with the Grand Ducal Palace, Place d’Armes and the Chemin de la Corniche. Stay here if you have two or three nights, no car, and want to walk out of the lobby into the UNESCO core. It suits first-time visitors, older travellers who don’t want hills at the end of the day, and anyone in town for a single evening who values proximity over price.
It does not suit families on a tight budget, drivers who need free parking, or night owls looking for bars past midnight. The plateau empties after 22:00 on weeknights, and the good restaurants book out days ahead in summer.
What is on your doorstep
Everything ceremonial is within a 10-minute walk: the Bock Casemates, Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Palace, MNAHA on the Marché-aux-Poissons, and the viewpoints over Grund and the Alzette. The Hamilius bus hub is five minutes away, and the funicular down to Pfaffenthal is a short walk past the Trois Tours. Expect to pay 260-380 EUR at Le Place d’Armes or Hotel Simoncini, and around 220 EUR at Hotel Français on the main square.
