Where to stay in Kirchberg: business district or bad idea?

Who it suits
Kirchberg is the plateau east of the old town, home to the EU institutions, the Philharmonie, MUDAM, the Coque sports centre and the shopping mall Auchan. Stay here if you have business at the European Court of Justice or the EIB, if you have concert tickets at the Philharmonie, or if you are arriving late by tram from the airport. Weekend rates at the Sofitel Europe, Melia and DoubleTree can fall below 130 EUR because the corporate market vanishes.
It does not suit leisure travellers on their first visit. The neighbourhood is glass towers and wide boulevards, not old Luxembourg, and evenings are dead outside the Philharmonie.
Getting to the old town
The tram runs every 4-6 minutes from Luxexpo down Avenue Kennedy through Kirchberg to Hamilius in Ville Haute, taking 12-15 minutes. It is free, like all public transport in the country. MUDAM, the Philharmonie and Fort Thüngen are within a 10-minute walk of most Kirchberg hotels; the Coque swimming pool costs 5.50 EUR to enter.

In theory, across the Grande-Duchesse Charlotte bridge in about 25 minutes. In practice everyone takes the tram — it is faster, free and runs late.
When are Kirchberg hotels most expensive?
European Council summit weeks (usually March, June, October, December) and major Philharmonie festivals. Rooms can double from Monday to Thursday during those periods.
