Gare Centrale station building and Avenue de la Liberté
Who it suits
Gare is the grid of streets around Luxembourg's main railway station, immediately south of the Pétrusse valley. Stay here if you are arriving by train from Brussels, Paris or Trier, if you have an early departure, or if you want to spend under 100 EUR per night in the capital. The Avenue de la Liberté leading north to the Pont Adolphe is grand and safe; the tram runs its length from the station up to Hamilius and out to Kirchberg.
It does not suit families with young children or anyone uncomfortable with visible street issues. Rue de Strasbourg and Rue de Bonnevoie behind the station have drug problems the city has not solved.
What is walkable
Ville Haute is 20 minutes on foot up Avenue de la Liberté, or two tram stops. The Pétrusse valley park is 10 minutes. The Rotondes cultural venue and food hall is a 15-minute walk south. Hotels on the Place de la Gare itself (Alvisse, Grand Hotel Cravat's sister properties, Best Western) are the safest bets; avoid the streets directly behind the station after dark.

Is the Gare area safe at night?
The main avenues and the station square are patrolled and fine. Rue de Strasbourg and the block behind the station are not somewhere to wander casually after 22:00.
How long is the tram from Gare to Kirchberg?
About 20 minutes from Gare Centrale to Luxexpo, passing through Hamilius. It runs every 4-6 minutes during the day and every 10-15 minutes late evening.
