Who it suits
Ettelbruck sits at the confluence of the Alzette and Sauer rivers, roughly 40 kilometres north of the capital. Stay here if you are exploring the Ardennes without a car — every bus north to Vianden, Wiltz, Clervaux and the Our valley starts from Ettelbruck bus station. The Patton Museum commemorates the general who liberated the town in December 1944, and the surrounding hills offer easy walking.
It does not suit anyone who wants a full day in the capital daily. Trains take 35-40 minutes each way, so you commute rather than sightsee.
What is walkable and reachable
The pedestrian Grand-Rue with local shops, the Patton Museum, and the market square. Bus 570 to Vianden takes 25 minutes and runs hourly. Bus 100 to Wiltz and onward to Clervaux takes about an hour. The Nordstad walking and cycling paths follow the Alzette. Hotel prices are 40-50% below the capital.

Yes, easily — the bus takes 25 minutes and there are frequent services. Vianden Castle, the chairlift and the town centre are all doable in half a day.
Ettelbruck or Diekirch as an Ardennes base?
Ettelbruck has better rail and bus connections; Diekirch is quieter and has the excellent Military Museum. If you don’t have a car, choose Ettelbruck.
