Who it suits
Esch-sur-Alzette is the country's second-largest town, in the former steel-producing south. Stay here if you want to save 40-80 EUR a night on the capital, if you are visiting Belval and the University of Luxembourg's Maison du Savoir campus (built on former blast-furnace grounds), or if you are exploring the Minett UNESCO Biosphere. Trains run every 15-20 minutes to Luxembourg City and are free.
It does not suit anyone who wants old-town Luxembourg on the doorstep. Esch has a pedestrian shopping street, a couple of museums and the Rockhal concert venue at Belval — but the fortifications, palace and casemates are all in the capital.
What is walkable
Rue de l’Alzette (the main shopping street), the Bâtiment 4 cultural venue, the Musée National de la Résistance, and the town's belle époque villas along Rue du Xe Septembre. Belval and the blast furnaces are one train stop away. Restaurants are half the price of the capital, and there is a lively Portuguese food scene.
