Differdange area guide: cheap beds in the industrial south

Differdange town centre with historic buildings

Who it suits

Differdange is the third-largest town in Luxembourg, still home to a working ArcelorMittal steel plant. Stay here if you are on a strict budget, if you want the industrial heritage of the Minett region without staying in Esch, or if you have business at the town's Miami University campus. Rooms are cheap because the town has almost no tourist market, and free public transport plus a frequent train link makes the capital reachable.

It does not suit anyone with limited time in the country. Sightseeing means getting on a train or bus for pretty much everything except a walk around the town centre.

What is nearby

Château de Differdange (now a Miami campus building), the Parc Gerlache, and the Fond-de-Gras heritage site with steam trains and a preserved mining village, 15 minutes away. The train to Luxembourg City takes 35-40 minutes. Esch is 15 minutes by train. The Ellergronn and Prënzebierg nature reserves start at the edge of town.

Frequently asked questions

When does the Fond-de-Gras heritage railway run?

Sundays and public holidays from May to September, with additional dates around Christmas markets. Check the Minett Park schedule before booking.

Is Differdange or Esch better for a base?

Esch has more restaurants and nightlife and a shorter train to the capital. Differdange is cheaper and closer to the mining heritage sites.
