Who it suits
Diekirch is a small town on the Sauer, home to the Diekirch brewery (the country's largest) and the National Museum of Military History covering the Battle of the Bulge. Stay here if you want a quieter alternative to Ettelbruck, if you are combining Ardennes trips with the Mullerthal Trail (which starts nearby), or if you are cycling the Sauer valley routes. The riverside path from Diekirch to Erpeldange is one of the best flat walks in the country.
It does not suit anyone who wants city amenities. Diekirch has one main street, and the tourist economy is limited to a few restaurants and hotels.
What is walkable
The Military Museum (allow two hours), the Roman mosaic in the town museum, the Alte Kirche (Old Church) with its ancient tombs, and the Sauer riverside. Ettelbruck is 10 minutes by train or a 40-minute walk along the river. Bus connections north go to Vianden and east to Echternach; both take around 45 minutes.
