Spring and summer
January-February: cold, grey, hotel rates at their lowest ($90-120 for mid-range), Christmas markets gone, restaurants quiet. March-April: crossover — cheap and slowly warming; Octave pilgrimage in late April fills the centre. May: peak spring, 15-20C, everything open, hotel rates rising. June: Grand Duke's Birthday on 23 June is fireworks, parades, and packed hotels — book three months out. July-August: summer schedule, EU officials on holiday so business hotels drop 30%, ideal for city breaks.
Autumn and Christmas markets
September: the single best month — 18C days, low rain, low crowds, Streeta(rt)nimation festival. October: mixed weather but Live Cinema festival and cheaper rooms. November: dreary, skip it unless you have specific business. December: Winterlights markets on Place d’Armes and Place de la Constitution run late November to early January — rates jump 40%, book six weeks ahead. The markets are pleasant but small compared to German equivalents; don’t fly in just for them.
