Vianden day trip from Luxembourg City
5 min read
Vianden Castle in the Ardennes
How to do it
Take the train from Luxembourg Gare to Ettelbruck (about 30 minutes, free), then bus 570 to Vianden (another 25 minutes, free). Total travel: under an hour each way. The castle opens 10am and costs $10; do the chairlift ($7) up first for the aerial view, walk down through the ramparts, then explore the town below. Victor Hugo lived here in 1871 and his house is a small museum, $6 entry, worth 30 minutes.
Eating and timing
Auberge Aal Veinen in the old town does game and Ardennes ham around $28 mains. Skip the touristy places on the main street near the bridge. Best time to arrive: 10am to beat coach tours. In summer, the medieval festival (first weekend of August) is genuinely good but doubles crowds. Return by 6pm for last easy connections; buses thin out in the evening. October foliage along the Our valley is exceptional if you time it right.
Frequently asked questions
Can I combine Vianden with Clervaux?
Only if you drive — public transport connections between the two are slow and awkward.
