What actually happens
National Day celebrates the Grand Duke's official birthday. The eve (22 June) is the big night: fireworks over the Petrusse valley around 11pm, torchlight procession from the palace, and every bar in Ville Haute and Grund is heaving. 23 June itself is a public holiday with a military parade on Avenue de la Liberte at 10am and a Te Deum at the cathedral. Public transport runs all night. Free, chaotic, genuinely fun.
Planning ahead
Book hotels by mid-March at the latest — Ville Haute properties triple in price and sell out. Better strategy: stay in Kirchberg or near the Gare where prices rise less, and walk in. Best fireworks view is from Place de la Constitution (packed by 9pm) or the Passerelle bridge (less crowded but more distant). Dinner reservations for the 22nd need to be locked in six weeks out. If you hate crowds, this is not your week — pick any other June date.
