The route to pick
The Mullerthal Trail is split into three routes. Route 2 is the classic — 37km loop from Echternach through the most dramatic sandstone gorges, the Schiessentumpel waterfall, and rock formations like Wolfsschlucht. Do it as a day section: Echternach to Berdorf is about 12km, 4-5 hours, moderate difficulty. Trails are well-marked, boots essential (roots and slippery sandstone), and you’ll meet more hikers than tourists on any given Saturday.
Logistics from the capital
Train to Ettelbruck then bus 500 or 414 to Echternach, about 90 minutes free door-to-door. Start early — the last bus back to Ettelbruck leaves around 8pm on weekdays, earlier weekends. Overnight in Echternach at Youth Hostel Echternach ($35 dorm) or Hotel Bel-Air ($130) if you want to hike two days. Best months: May-June and September-October. July-August is fine but humid and busy. Winter hikes are stunning but the sandstone gets treacherous.
