Moselle wine region: when to visit month by month

The wine calendar

The Luxembourg Moselle runs 42 kilometres from Wasserbillig south to Schengen. It makes primarily white and cremant, with elbling, rivaner, auxerrois, pinot gris and riesling as the main grapes. Most cellars follow the same rhythm: closed or by-appointment only January-February, open weekends from March, open Thursday-Sunday April-October, harvest and full activity mid-September to mid-October, then wind down through November.

Named producers worth calling ahead for: Domaine Alice Hartmann in Wormeldange (top-tier riesling, 25-euro tastings), Caves Bernard-Massard in Grevenmacher (biggest cremant house, walk-in tours), Domaine Sunnen-Hoffmann in Remerschen (organic), Krier-Welbes in Ellange. Most cellars charge 8-15 euros for a five-wine tasting; the flagship houses run 20-30.

Festivals and peak weekends

Grevenmacher's Wine and Grape Festival, on the second weekend of September, is the biggest event of the year — parade, wine princess crowning, and pouring stands along the quayside. Hotels in Grevenmacher and Machtum sell out by June for this weekend. Remich runs its own festival in early September (Fete du Raisin et du Vin), smaller and more relaxed.

May and June bring Cremant tastings across multiple villages on set weekends (Cremant en Fete). July sees the Riesling Open in mid-September confusingly named — it's actually a wine-and-food weekend along the whole Moselle. October wraps with autumn menus and new-vintage releases. Rates in Moselle village hotels sit around 100-140 euros most of the year, spike to 160-200 for festival weekends, and drop to 75-100 in January-February when few cellars operate.

How to actually visit

Base yourself in Luxembourg City and day-trip: train to Wasserbillig (20 minutes), then bus 130 south along the river with hop-off stops at Wormeldange, Ehnen, Remich. Or drive — the Route du Vin follows the river closely. Boat trips (MS Princesse Marie-Astrid) run Remich-Schengen and other routes April-October only, from 12 euros for a two-hour cruise.

For an overnight, Hotel Saint-Nicolas in Remich (four-star, 140-180 euros) and Hotel Simmer in Ehnen (small, 90-120) are the reliable picks. Ehnen's Musee du Vin gives useful context in 45 minutes. Skip the region entirely if you’re coming in January or the first three weeks of February — most cellars are shut and villages are dead. Come September-October for the fullest experience.
