The five holiday windows

Luxembourg schools follow a similar rhythm to Belgium and France, with five main breaks. Carnival week is a week in mid-February. Easter holidays run two weeks around Easter Sunday (variable, but usually late March to mid-April). Whitsun/Pentecost is one week in late May or early June. Summer holidays are the last two weeks of July and all of August, roughly. Toussaint is the last week of October into the first week of November. Christmas is 24 December to about 2 January.

Exact 2026 dates are published by the Ministry of Education each spring. Cross-border traffic matters too: German (Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland), Belgian and French (Grand Est) school breaks overlap partially with Luxembourg's and drive weekend rural tourism. The Mullerthal, Vianden and Moselle villages fill up on these weekends even when Luxembourg City itself stays quiet.

What happens to prices and availability

Luxembourg City hotel rates barely move for local school holidays because families leave rather than arrive — you can get good midweek deals during Carnival week and Toussaint. Rural rates behave oppositely. A Vianden hotel that costs 90 euros on a normal October weekend hits 140-160 during Toussaint. Mullerthal gites in Berdorf and Beaufort get booked six months ahead for Easter and Toussaint weekends.

Easter is the biggest countryside spike because it combines Luxembourg, Belgian and French holidays. The Emaischen pottery market in Nospelt on Easter Monday adds pressure. Summer (July-August) is the strangest period: city hotels stay expensive because of business travel but restaurants shut, while rural areas run mid-range prices with everything open. Whitsun weekend can catch visitors off-guard — it's a three-day weekend with widespread closures on Monday.

How to plan around them

For a countryside-focused trip (Mullerthal, Vianden, Ardennes), avoid Easter, Toussaint and Whitsun weekends unless you book by January. Aim for mid-May, June midweek, or the second half of September. For a city-focused trip, actively target local school holiday weeks — the city empties, hotel rates soften, and museum queues shrink. Carnival week in February and the first week of Toussaint are particularly good.

Public transport (free across the country) runs on Sunday schedules on public holidays: 1 May, Ascension Thursday, Whit Monday, 23 June, 15 August, 1 November, 25 and 26 December. Museums split — MUDAM and MNHA close 25 December and 1 January but stay open other holidays. Restaurants often close entirely on 25-26 December and 1 January; a smaller number close on 1 May and 23 June.
