The dead zone: 4-20 November

The first weekend of November wraps up Toussaint holidays and the last of the autumn colour. From roughly 4 November to 20 November, Luxembourg tourism hits its annual floor. Weather runs 4-9 degrees, rain most days, fog in the valleys, daylight until 5pm at the start of the month and 4.30pm by the end. The Bock Casemates have closed for the winter. The Vianden chairlift is done. Moselle cellars have mostly shut for the year.

This is when rural hotels do their maintenance. Several Vianden and Mullerthal hotels close for two to four weeks in early to mid November. Restaurants in Grund and Clausen take shorter breaks. Luxembourg City itself stays functional — museums open, funicular running, Pfaffenthal lift on schedule — but empty. You can walk the entire Corniche at midday and not see another tourist.

Prices and who this suits

Room rates match January's floor. Three-star Gare hotels at 75-95 euros, four-star central at 130-160. Kirchberg business hotels drop weekends to 85-110 with breakfast. Airbnb studios in Belair go for 55-70. These are the cheapest rooms of the year alongside January and early February. Restaurants that stay open have space every night; you can walk into Chiggeri or Am Tiirmschen on Saturday.

Come if: you want museums (MUDAM, MNHA, Villa Vauban) without crowds, you’re combining Luxembourg with a Trier or Metz rail loop, you want the cheapest weekend of the year in a functional European capital. Don’t come if: you want outdoor activities, terrace time, the Moselle, or Christmas atmosphere. The markets don’t start until 20-21 November at the earliest.

The transition weekend

The last weekend of November flips everything. Winterlights markets open (usually the Friday closest to 21 November), central hotel rates jump 40-60 percent on the opening weekend, and Ville Haute goes from empty to packed. Cross-border coach tours from Belgium, Germany and northern France restart. If you book for the second half of November, watch that opening date carefully — a Friday-Sunday stay across the launch weekend costs roughly twice a stay ending the Thursday before.

The 1 November All Saints holiday earlier in the month is a public transport Sunday-schedule day with widespread closures — plan around it if you’re travelling that weekend. Beyond that, November is genuinely off-season, and the city rewards it with the cheapest, quietest, most local-feeling few weeks you can get without going in January's cold.
