What actually happens on 22-23 June

National Day officially falls on 23 June, celebrating the Grand Duke's birthday. The real party is the evening of the 22nd: a torchlight parade from Place Guillaume II, changing of the guard at the Grand Ducal Palace, and fireworks launched from the Pont Adolphe over the Petrusse valley around 11pm. Bars in Grund and Clausen stay open until 3am with no cover charges. Streets in Ville Haute close to traffic from mid-afternoon.

The 23rd itself is a public holiday. A military parade runs along Avenue de la Liberte in the morning, followed by a 21-gun salute and a Te Deum at Notre-Dame Cathedral attended by the Grand Ducal family. Most shops shut, museums keep reduced hours, and restaurants either close entirely or run a set menu. If you want a table anywhere in Ville Haute or Grund on the evening of the 23rd, book by early May.

Hotel prices and where to book

Rates for the night of 22 June are the highest of the entire year. A room that costs 140 euros on a normal June Tuesday goes to 320-400 euros. Four-star hotels near the fireworks (Sofitel Le Grand Ducal, Le Royal, Melia) hit 450-550. Even Kirchberg business hotels, which usually empty on weekends, sell out and charge 220-280. Airbnb prices in Bonnevoie and Belair roughly double. Book by mid-March for any central option, and by April for anything with a Petrusse view.

If budget matters more than location, look at Esch-sur-Alzette (25 minutes by train, rooms 90-120 euros even on the 22nd) or Ettelbruck. The last train back to Luxembourg City runs late but check schedules — public transport is free but reduced late-night. Coming for one night only? Arrive on the 22nd, leave on the 24th; the 23rd itself is quieter than you’d expect once fireworks are done.

What to skip and what to book

Skip trying to eat dinner between 8pm and 10pm on the 22nd unless you have a reservation — you’ll wander for an hour. Skip driving anywhere in the centre; the Grund and Ville Haute are pedestrianised from about 3pm. Skip formal restaurants on the 23rd itself; go for a long lunch instead, or grab gromperekichelcher and mettwurst from street stalls on Place Guillaume II.

Book: a hotel by April, a dinner reservation by early May (Um Plateau in Clausen, Bouquet Garni in Ville Haute, Chiggeri near the cathedral), and a Petrusse-view spot for fireworks by 9pm — the Chemin de la Corniche and the terrace outside the Bock casemates fill first. The Pfaffenthal lift runs late but queues get 40 minutes long around 10.30pm.
