Luxembourg in October: autumn in the Mullerthal and Moselle

Autumn colours on sandstone cliffs in the Mullerthal region
Autumn colour, weather and where to go
October is when Luxembourg's landscape earns its northern-Europe reputation. The Mullerthal's beech forests turn deep gold and red from mid-October through the first week of November. The Ardennes around Clervaux and Vianden peak a week earlier because they’re higher and cooler. Temperatures run 10-16 degrees by day, 5-8 at night. Rain shows up about one day in three; morning fog in the Alzette and Sure valleys is common and photogenic.
Best routes: Trail 2 of the Mullerthal (37 kilometres in three days from Consdorf, or a day loop from Berdorf), the Sure valley path from Esch-sur-Sure, and the panoramic drive from Vianden up to the Our valley. Boots need to be waterproof — sandstone gets slippery. The Vianden chairlift runs through end of October, then closes for winter.
Prices and school holidays
Luxembourg City four-star rooms drop to 110-150 euros midweek, 140-180 weekends — roughly 20 percent below September. Three-star Gare rooms at 90-110. Rural hotels see bigger drops: Vianden's Auberge Aal Veinen and Hotel Belle-Vue fall to 90-120 euros. The Toussaint (All Saints) school holiday, typically the last week of October into the first week of November, briefly spikes weekend rates in the countryside, especially near the Mullerthal and Vianden, as Luxembourg and Belgian families take short breaks.
Moselle wine village hotels in Remich and Ehnen fill up on the first two weekends of October for the Wine and Grape festivals — Grevenmacher's is the biggest, usually the second weekend. Book by mid-August for these. Otherwise, October is easy — you can book two or three days ahead almost anywhere.
What's still open and what to eat
Everything is open. Restaurants are back from summer breaks, Casemates du Bock run until early November before winter closure, Moselle cellars are at their busiest with new-vintage tastings, and museums keep full hours. Autumn menus lean into game — wild boar and venison from the Ardennes appear at Bouquet Garni, Chiggeri and rural inns like Auberge du Chateau in Vianden. Kachkeis with new-harvest apples is on every market stall.
One thing to check: Bock Casemates typically close for the winter season around the first weekend of November. If seeing them matters, come in the first three weeks of October. Pfaffenthal lift and the funicular run year-round. The Vianden Castle stays open all year but chairlift access ends in November.
