Weather and what opens back up
May is when Luxembourg turns properly green. Daytime hits 18-22 degrees, evenings stay warm enough for terraces until about 10pm, and daylight lasts until 9pm by month-end. Rain still happens (about one day in three) but rarely all day. The Petrusse valley greens up, the Alzette runs clear, and Grund's outdoor seating fills every weekend.
The Bock Casemates reopen for the season, usually from the first weekend of April but with fuller hours by May. The Vianden chairlift restarts, Moselle wine cellars in Remich, Wormeldange and Grevenmacher run tastings again (typically Fridays through Sundays), and Mullerthal Trail 2 dries out for the full loop. Every restaurant that closed for winter is back. The Emaischen pottery market in Nospelt on Easter Monday is a local, not tourist, event worth the 20-minute drive.
Prices and the marathon weekend
Midweek four-star rooms sit at 160-200 euros, weekends at 200-240. That's roughly 25 percent under June and 40 percent under peak weekends in September. Three-stars in Gare run 110-140. This is the last month before National Day pushes everything up.
The exception is Luxembourg City Marathon weekend, typically the last Saturday of May. Central hotels sell out and rates jump to 280-350. The route closes half of Ville Haute and Kirchberg from about 3pm Saturday to 1am Sunday, so getting between neighbourhoods becomes awkward. If you’re not running, either book Belair or Merl (outside the route) or come the weekend before or after. Ascension Thursday (usually mid-May) is a public holiday with Sunday-schedule closures.
What to actually do
Do the Wenzel Walk in full — the 5.5 kilometre loop from Bock down through Grund, along the Alzette to Pfaffenthal, and back up via the lift takes about two hours and covers a thousand years of fortifications. Do a Moselle half-day: train to Wasserbillig, bus to Wormeldange for cremant at Domaine Alice Hartmann, then Remich for lunch. Do Vianden Castle midweek to skip Belgian coach tours.
Sit on Place d’Armes in the evening with a Bofferding and watch the free bandstand concerts (they run Wednesdays and weekends from May). Book Um Plateau in Clausen or Bouquet Garni in Ville Haute for one proper dinner. Skip the Petrusse boat tours — the water is too low and the route too short for the 15 euros. Walk instead.
