Good Friday is not a public holiday in Luxembourg (unlike Germany), so shops and restaurants operate normally. Easter Sunday and Easter Monday are both public holidays — expect Sunday-schedule public transport, most shops closed, and reduced restaurant openings. Museums split: MUDAM and MNHA usually open Easter Monday, some close Easter Sunday. Bock Casemates run holiday hours if they’ve reopened for the season (typically early April).

Emaischen on Easter Monday is the standout local event. It's a pottery and craft fair held in Nospelt (a village 15 kilometres west of Luxembourg City) and in Ville Haute at Place du Marche-aux-Poissons. The signature item is the Peckvillchen — a small whistling clay bird, sold for 5-15 euros. It's genuinely local, not a tourist show. Get there before 11am for parking in Nospelt or take bus 220 from the city.

Hotel prices and where to stay

Easter is one of the three peak rural weekends of the year (with National Day and the Grevenmacher wine festival). Vianden, Mullerthal and Moselle village hotels book out by January. A Vianden three-star that costs 90 euros on a normal April weekend hits 150-180 for Easter. Luxembourg City is calmer — four-star rooms sit at 180-220, up modestly from a normal early-April weekend.

If you want a countryside Easter, book by December for Vianden's Hotel Belle-Vue or Auberge Aal Veinen, Berdorf's Bel-Air, or any Moselle village hotel. If you leave it late, base in the city and day-trip. The Emaischen crowds thin by 3pm — go for lunch, back to the city by evening. Restaurant bookings for Easter Sunday lunch and Easter Monday dinner need to be made by early March.

Easter falls anywhere from late March to mid-April, so weather varies. Late-March Easters see 8-14 degrees, wet and unpredictable. Mid-April Easters run 12-18 degrees, occasionally warm enough for terraces. Mullerthal trails are open but muddy. Vianden Castle sees its first coach-tour crowds of the season and can queue at midday — arrive by 10am or after 3pm.

Beyond Emaischen, look for Easter services at Notre-Dame Cathedral (Saturday Vigil and Sunday High Mass) and the Octave pilgrimage which sometimes starts around Easter — a two-week Marian pilgrimage that draws people from across the Greater Region and fills central hotels for its opening weekend. Check exact 2026 dates; the Octave typically runs from the third Sunday after Easter for two weeks.
