The Luxembourg Castle Driving Route: 5 Castles in 2 Days

Day 1: Vianden, Bourscheid, Esch-sur-Sure

Leave the capital by 8:30am, north on the A7 motorway. Vianden by 9:45 — park at the lower town lot ($2 a day) and walk up. Castle opens 10am; give it 90 minutes for the halls, chapel and arms room. Drive south on the N17 along the Our river to Bourscheid by 1pm — this is a ruin, not a restored castle, and admission is $7. The site is huge and the views across the Sure valley are the best in the country. Allow 90 minutes and eat lunch at the on-site cafe or bring a sandwich.

Continue west on the N27 to Esch-sur-Sure, a village that wraps around a rocky loop of river beneath a tiny ruin. Park in the village lot, walk up to the ruin (free, always open), and have dinner at Hotel de la Sure. Sleep there — rooms around $90 — or drive 20 minutes to Wiltz for more choice.

Day 2: Clervaux and Beaufort

Morning: drive north from Esch-sur-Sure via the N15 to Clervaux, 40 minutes. The castle here is worth the stop mainly for the Family of Man photo exhibition inside ($6, closed Mondays) — a UNESCO listing and easily 90 minutes of viewing. Coffee in the village square, then drive east and south on the N7 and N19 through Diekirch toward Beaufort, about 90 minutes with a stop for lunch in Ettelbruck (try Restaurant Lea Linster if you want a Michelin experience, otherwise the town brasseries).

Beaufort by 2pm. The medieval castle and the Renaissance castle sit side by side — combined ticket $12, allow two hours. The Renaissance castle produces its own Cassero blackcurrant liqueur; the tour includes a tasting. Drive back to Luxembourg City in under an hour on the A7. Sleep back in Ville Haute or, if you prefer to end quietly, Hotel Meyer in Beaufort itself.

Practicalities

All roads on this route are paved and easy in a normal car; the only tight stretches are the descents into Esch-sur-Sure and Vianden. Fuel is cheaper in Luxembourg than in surrounding countries, so fill up before crossing any border. Castles generally close 5pm in low season, 6pm high season — build in a buffer. Combined castle passes exist through the Luxembourg Card ($28 a day, 68 for three days) and pay off if you visit three or more.

Skip Larochette castle unless you’re passing through — it's a small ruin with limited access. Skip Hollenfels unless you have a specific interest; it's used as a youth hostel and public access is restricted.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do all five castles in one day?

Physically yes, meaningfully no. You’ll spend all day driving and rushing tickets. Two days is the honest minimum for a route that lets you actually walk the sites.

Is the Luxembourg Card worth it for this route?

Yes if you do three or more castles plus one museum. The three-day card at $68 covers Vianden, Bourscheid, Beaufort and Clervaux with room to spare.
