Luxembourg Christmas markets: Winterlights month by month

Dates, squares and what's actually there

Winterlights runs from around 21 November to 24 December, closing at 6pm on Christmas Eve and not reopening. The four main sites are Place d’Armes (biggest, most food stalls), Place de la Constitution (small ferris wheel, view over Petrusse, gluhwein huts), Place Guillaume II (crafts, mulled cider) and the smaller Roude Peckvillchen market near the palace. All are walkable in 15 minutes.

Food is the reason to come: gromperekichelcher (potato fritters with apple sauce), mettwurst, kachkeis on toast, and Feierstengszalot as a cold option. Gluhwein runs 4-5 euros; a keepsake mug adds 3 euros deposit. The Kachkeis burger stall on Place d’Armes has a permanent queue. Craft stalls skew practical — sheep wool slippers, honey from the Ardennes, Moselle spirits — rather than tourist tat.

Hotel prices week by week

The first weekend (typically late November) is the busiest and most expensive: four-star rooms in Ville Haute jump to 230-290 euros, up from a mid-November baseline of 150-180. Weekdays through early December are much better value — Monday to Thursday rates barely move from November levels because Kirchberg business travel drops off. The second and third December weekends spike again, particularly if they fall close to the 8th (Immaculate Conception, big for cross-border visitors).

The week of 20-24 December softens as locals stop travelling. Rooms are available at reasonable rates two or three days out. Then 25-26 December are dead — 100-130 euros for a four-star, but you’ll struggle to find dinner. New Year's Eve rebounds hard: 250-350 euros for anything central, and hotels with Petrusse views for the fireworks require booking by early November.

What's open on 25 and 26 December

Almost nothing. The markets are shut. Most restaurants are closed both days, though a handful of hotel restaurants and a few Asian places in Gare stay open — Sofitel Le Grand Ducal's restaurant runs a Christmas Day menu around 120 euros, and Melia serves brunch. Supermarkets are closed on both days; Sunday-open convenience shops near the train station are your only option. Public transport runs on Sunday timetables both days.

Museums split: MUDAM and the Musee National d’Histoire et d’Art close 25 December but open 26 December. The Casemates du Bock are usually closed for the winter season by then anyway (they shut in early November). If you’re here on the 25th, plan a long walk — Chemin de la Corniche to Grund and back up via the Pfaffenthal lift is quiet, atmospheric and free.
