Sleep

Luxembourg Youth Hostel in Pfaffenthal is the only proper hostel in the capital — dorm beds $28-$34, private singles from $55, and the location under the Pont Adolphe is genuinely great. Outside the city, hostels in Echternach ($26), Vianden ($28) and Beaufort ($26) let you sleep in the countryside cheaply. Book 2-3 weeks ahead in summer.

Eat and see

All public transport is free — that alone saves $10-$15 a day versus most European capitals. Kniddelen (dumplings) at market stalls run $8. Bakery lunch: quiche + drink for $9 at Fischer or Oberweis. The National Museum of History and Art is free on Thursdays after 6pm; the Bock casemates are $8. The Pétrusse valley walk costs nothing and takes half a day. Total achievable: $50 covers hostel + 2 meals + 1 museum easily.

Frequently asked questions

Is $50 a day realistic in high season?

Just barely — hostel prices creep up in July-August. Book far ahead or move your dates to shoulder seasons (April-May, October) when the same hostel bed drops to $26.

What's genuinely free to do?

The Pfaffenthal elevator, all tram and bus rides, the Corniche walk, most churches, Sunday markets at Place Guillaume, and the guard-change at the Palais in summer.
