The free transport network
All buses, all trams, all national trains (second class) are free — no ticket, no card, just get on. The tram T1 runs from the airport through Kirchberg to Place de l’Etoile and down to the Gare, hitting most tourist points; it's the single most useful line. National trains reach Esch, Ettelbruck, Vianden connections, and Diekirch within an hour of Luxembourg Gare. Buses fill the gaps to smaller villages and the Mullerthal.
When to drive or taxi
You need a car only for the Mullerthal (Little Switzerland) trails and remote Ardennes villages where buses run every two hours. Rentals from Findel Airport start around $45 a day. Taxis are extortionate: $20 minimum, $30-40 across town. Uber does not operate; the local app is Webtaxi. Cycling infrastructure is improving but the topography (valleys, steep climbs) makes it hard work — e-bike rentals from Velo en Ville at $25/day are the honest solution.
