The real castles

Château d’Urspelt near Clervaux is the flagship: a fully restored 18th-century manor with 56 rooms, a good bistro and a wellness area. Rooms from around €180 and it is genuinely quiet. Hôtel Château de Bourglinster is smaller (six rooms) inside a medieval keep with a Michelin-starred restaurant on site — book the restaurant when you book the room, it is the point.

Hôtel Le Petit Guillaume in Vianden is not a castle but sits directly below the Vianden château, with rooms looking up at the walls. For the actual castle-village experience, this is the pick. Auberge Aal Veinen next door is the budget alternative with the same view.

Manors, halls and honest fakes

Château de Schengen has been converted into a boutique hotel by the Moselle, useful if you want the wine region and something historic. Domaine La Forêt in Remich is a country house rather than a castle but the setting is closer to what most people picture. Parc Hôtel Alvisse in Dommeldange trades on its 19th-century mansion façade but the guest rooms are in modern wings — do not book expecting period atmosphere.

Skip anything in central Luxembourg City calling itself a "palace hotel." The real castle stays are all outside the capital, 30-90 minutes by car, and you need transport to enjoy them properly.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a car for a castle hotel?

Effectively yes. Bourglinster, Urspelt and Schengen have no useful bus service in the evenings. Vianden is reachable by train plus bus but the last connection is around 20:00.

Which castle hotel is best for a couple's weekend?

Bourglinster for the food-focused stay, Urspelt for the full manor experience with spa, Schengen if you want to combine with Moselle wine tastings.
