Sandstone rock formations in the Mullerthal Trail

Sandstone rock formations in the Mullerthal Trail

The top four

1. Hike Mullerthal Trail Route 2 from Echternach to Berdorf — 12 km through the sandstone labyrinths, past Wolfsschlucht and Perekop. Half a day, moderate difficulty. 2. Explore Echternach basilica and Willibrord's crypt — the town is the country's oldest, founded 698. 3. The Schiessentümpel triple waterfall — the postcard shot of the region, easy 15-minute walk from a car park on the CR121. 4. Beaufort Castle — two castles side by side, the medieval ruin free to view and the Renaissance one open for tours with a cassis liqueur tasting.

Three more if you have time

5. Larochette — a smaller castle town with a good market square, half an hour is enough. 6. The Hohllay cave near Berdorf — a hollowed sandstone chamber once used as a millstone quarry, spooky and free. 7. The Consdorf mill circuit — quieter alternative to Route 2 if the main trail feels crowded on a summer Sunday. Skip the Echternach Prehistory Museum; it's fine but you didn’t come to Mullerthal for museum interiors.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do the Mullerthal without a car?

Yes for Echternach (bus 110 or 111 from Luxembourg City, about 45 minutes) and the trail sections starting there. Schiessentümpel and Larochette are hard without wheels; buses exist but run 4-6 times daily.

What footwear do I need?

Proper hiking shoes with grip. The sandstone gets slick in the wooded ravines even in summer, and there are ladders and step sections on Route 2. Trainers are fine only for Schiessentümpel and the town walks.
