The top three

1. Parc de la Pétrusse — the reopened valley park after the 2023 flood-defence redesign, running under Pont Adolphe with picnic lawns and the casemates entrance at one end. The single best green space in the city and completely free. 2. Parc Municipal (Parc de la Ville) — the elegant 19th-century park between Ville Haute and Limpertsberg, home to Villa Vauban and a good weekend playground. 3. Kirchberg's Parc Central — modernist landscaping between the EU buildings, less pretty but useful for a break between MUDAM and Philharmonie.

4. Parc Merl — quiet residential park in the west of the city with a lake, geese and a decent café-kiosk. Locals bring kids, tourists never come. 5. Parc de Merl-Belair extended greenbelt — same area, longer walking loops if you want a proper hour on foot. Skip the Klouschtergaart behind Neumünster Abbey unless you’re already in Grund; it's charming but tiny, five minutes and you’re done.

Pétrusse in warm months — grocery run at Alima on avenue de la Liberté, then descend the stairs by Pont Adolphe. Parc Municipal in shoulder season when you want benches, shade and a nearby café.

Are the parks safe after dark?

Parc Municipal and Merl are quiet and generally safe but poorly lit. The Pétrusse valley closes practical use around dusk — the paths are open but empty. Stick to the city streets after 10pm.
