1. Vianden — the country's flagship, restored to grand-ducal specification, gothic halls and Rhineland armour, €10, allow two hours. Take bus 570 from Ettelbruck. 2. Bourscheid — the largest ruined castle in Luxembourg, perched 150 metres above the Sûre, wilder and less polished than Vianden but the setting is unbeatable. €7. 3. Beaufort — the only place where you can visit both a medieval ruin and a Renaissance château on the same ticket (€10), plus the cassis distillery tour.

4. Clervaux — the exterior and the Family of Man photo exhibition inside make it a two-in-one, though the castle rooms themselves are modest. 5. Larochette — free to enter the ruins, small but photogenic above the town square. 6. Useldange — free, minor, but worth 20 minutes if you’re driving past. Skip Wiltz castle for its interior; the amphitheatre courtyard is fine to look at from outside but the museum is skippable unless you’re there for the July open-air festival.

Which is best for kids?

Vianden. Real armour, dungeon feel, a chairlift up the hillside for the approach view, and Ettelbruck's military museum an easy add-on. Beaufort is a close second for the tunnel-and-torture-chamber factor.

Can I see multiple castles in one day?

Beaufort and Bourscheid pair well if driving — 25 minutes between them. Vianden deserves its own half day. Larochette and Useldange can be add-ons on the drive back to the city.
