Elegant villas on a quiet Belair avenue

Belair sits west of Ville Haute, above the Pétrusse valley. It's affluent, quiet, and predominantly residential — Art Nouveau and interwar villas along Avenue du X Septembre and Avenue Guillaume, small squares with a bakery and a wine shop, embassies tucked behind hedges. There's almost nothing to 'do' here in a tourist sense, but the Parc de Merl at the western end is one of the city's better parks, with playgrounds and running paths, and Rue de Bragance has a few good restaurants.

Stay here if you’re on a longer stay, traveling with kids, or renting a car — parking is easier than downtown and it's a smooth 15-minute walk or 5-minute bus to Ville Haute. Skip if you want walkable nightlife or your first-time in Luxembourg — you’ll spend time commuting to the sights and won’t have the atmosphere at your door. Very safe, very clean, occasionally boring.

Where to stay

Limited hotel options; more small apartments and a handful of business-oriented hotels on Avenue du X Septembre and Rue Charles Martel. Expect $130-200 a night. The area near Place Léon XIII (not to be confused with Bonnevoie's identically named square) is central and quiet. Avoid roomswith poor sound insulation facing Boulevard Napoléon 1er, which carries steady daytime traffic. Sunday mornings are almost silent everywhere.

Getting there

Buses 12, 21, and 22 connect Belair to Hamilius in 8-12 minutes. From Gare Centrale, bus 12 direct in about 15 minutes. From the airport, bus 16 to Hamilius then one transfer, roughly 40 minutes total. Walking to Ville Haute takes 15-20 minutes via Boulevard Royal or Avenue Emile Reuter. Inside Belair everything worth seeing is walkable within 20 minutes.

Is Belair convenient for tourists?

It's convenient for base-of-operations stays of five nights or more, or family stays that value quiet. For a two-night visit it eats too much time in commuting — Ville Haute or Limpertsberg is faster.

Where is Parc de Merl relative to the neighborhood of Merl?

The park sits between Belair and Merl, straddling both. From Belair you enter on the east side; from Merl on the west. Either works, but the Belair side has more paths and playgrounds.
