Ville Haute (old town)

The historic centre around Place d’Armes and Place Guillaume II is where you want to be if it's your first visit and money is no object. Hotel Le Place d’Armes ($340+) and Hotel Simoncini ($220+) sit here. You’ll walk to every major sight, but expect $18 cocktails and $28 pasta. Streets can be dead after 22:00 on weeknights outside the main squares.

Gare (station area)

The 10-minute walk south from the centre. Best value for mid-range travellers: Hotel Vauban ($95), Ibis Styles ($110), Novotel Kirchberg $140. The area around Rue de Strasbourg has cheap ethnic eats ($9-14) and late bars, but the stretch immediately east of the station gets shady after midnight. Trams run to the old town in 8 minutes.

Grund and Clausen

The valley bars and restaurants cluster in these two quarters. Actual hotels are rare — try Airbnbs in the Grund ($130-180 for a studio). Great atmosphere, terrible for luggage (steep staircases), and expensive dining. Rives de Clausen brings weekend nightlife noise until 03:00.

Kirchberg and Belair

Kirchberg suits business travellers — modern hotels ($160-220) beside the EU institutions and Mudam museum, connected by tram. Belair is residential leafy suburb with cheaper mid-range options ($105-130) but limited dining. Bonnevoie south of the station has hostel beds from $32 and Sunday's Bouneweger Maart market.

Best area for first-timers?

Ville Haute if budget allows, Gare if not. Both walk or tram to the sights in under 15 minutes.

Is the station area safe?

Generally yes but the streets east of the station (Rue Joseph Junck) have drug activity and street prostitution after dark. Book west of the station and you’re fine.

Where do EU workers stay?

Kirchberg, Belair, and Limpertsberg. Business hotels dominate; expect corporate rates Monday-Thursday, discounts on weekends.
