Getting around Luxembourg

Tram at Kirchberg station
Free public transport
All buses, trams, and second-class trains within Luxembourg are free. No ticket needed, ever. First-class rail requires a $3-8 supplement and cross-border trains (to Trier, Metz, Brussels) charge the section beyond the border. Download the Mobilitéit.lu app for live schedules — the app is more accurate than Google Maps in Luxembourg.
In the city
Tram line T1 runs from Luxexpo (Kirchberg) through the centre to Stade de Luxembourg via Central Station. It's the backbone: 12 minutes from station to Kirchberg, every 4-6 minutes 05:00-01:00. Buses fill gaps — line 16 is useful for the airport. Two free funicular-style lifts (Pfaffenthal and Ville Haute) connect the plateau to the valleys and count as public transport.
Beyond the city
Trains reach Ettelbruck, Diekirch, Wasserbillig, Esch-sur-Alzette, and Clervaux. Buses cover the rest — bus 100 (north to Diekirch), 175 (east to Remich), and 194 (south to Mondorf) are the most useful. Journey planner combines both. Late-night buses are limited — check the last departure or plan on a taxi.
Taxis, bikes, cars
Taxis are expensive: $12 minimum, $3-4 per km. Uber does not operate; Webtaxi is the local app. Vel’OH! bike share ($2/day for 30-minute trips) works in the city. Rental cars run $55-75/day and only make sense for Mullerthal deep exploration. Parking in Ville Haute is expensive ($3/hour) and limited.

Do I need to validate anything?
No. Ticket machines at stations sell first-class supplements and cross-border tickets only.
How late do trams run?
Roughly 05:00 to 01:00, with reduced frequency after midnight. Night buses (CN routes) cover Friday and Saturday nights until 03:30.
