Getting there
Bus 110 from Luxembourg Central (Gare stop) runs direct to Echternach in about 70 minutes, every 30 minutes on weekdays. Alternatively train to Wasserbillig (35 min) then bus 485 (30 min) if you want to see the Moselle. All free. Echternach's bus station sits 200 metres from the Benedictine abbey.
In town
The Basilica of Saint Willibrord (free) holds the tomb of the English monk who founded Echternach and gives its name to the UNESCO-listed dancing procession held every Whit Tuesday. The Abbey Museum ($5) has the illuminated Codex Aureus facsimiles and Roman-era artefacts.
The main square, Place du Marché, has the 15th-century Denzelt Gothic pavilion and cafés serving $10 tartes flambées. Rent a bike from the tourist office ($15/day) to reach the natural lake and swimming beach 1 km north.
Mullerthal hiking
The signposted Mullerthal Trail starts from the abbey. The most photogenic 8 km loop follows Route 2 to Schiessentümpel waterfall through the Wolfsschlucht gorge and back via Perekop, taking about 3 hours. Wear grippy shoes; sandstone gets slippery after rain. Bring water — no shops between Echternach and Berdorf village (5 km in).
