The setup
Dudelange is a former steel town in the south, close to the French border. It has an active cultural life focused on the Centre National de l’Audiovisuel, the Waassertuerm Pomhouse photography space in a converted water tower, and the Fonderie art centre. Hotel rooms run $70-100 for three-star, which is about as cheap as the country gets outside hostels.
Direct trains to Luxembourg Central Station take 22-28 minutes and run twice hourly. Free transport applies as everywhere in Luxembourg.

Dudelange suits photography enthusiasts specifically, and budget travellers happy to trade proximity for price. The Pomhouse and CNA together are among the best photo exhibition programmes in the country. The town also has decent Portuguese restaurants reflecting its migrant history.
It does not suit anyone who wants to walk out of the hotel into an old-town scene. Dudelange is functional rather than picturesque, and evenings are quiet. If price is your only concern, Esch is livelier for similar money.
