A quiet small town with one big draw
Diekirch sits on the Sure river 8 minutes east of Ettelbruck by train. Its centre is small and pedestrianised, with the excellent National Museum of Military History covering the Battle of the Bulge in exceptional detail, plus a Roman mosaic in the municipal museum. Hotels are small and family-run, with rooms $75-110 including breakfast at most places.
The town is a walking-distance base rather than a rail hub: everything in the centre is inside a 10-minute walk from any hotel.
Who fits here
Diekirch suits Second World War history travellers specifically. The Military History Museum is on the level of much larger institutions elsewhere and easily justifies a full day. It also suits hikers linking to the Mullerthal via the Ernz Noire, and cyclists on the Sure valley cycle path.
It does not suit anyone treating Luxembourg as a short city break. The trip up from the capital is 40 minutes each way, and Diekirch has limited evening life. Book Vianden if you want castle atmosphere, the capital if you want city amenities.
